AB: Measurements of PAN and a series of its homologues were made on board the NOAA P-3 aircraft during the New England Air Quality Study (NEAQS) as part of the 2004 ICARTT field intensive. 8 different PAN compounds were measured (6 PANs simultaneously) with a time resolution of 2 seconds by employing a Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer (PAN-CIGAR). The results presented here will focus on observations of PANs in biomass burning emissions from Canadian and Alaskan forest fires. Plumes from these fires were frequently observed over the Northeastern US and Southeastern Canada over the course of the experiment. The forest fire plumes generally showed PANs as the dominant NOy component indicating efficient removal of HNO3 from these air masses. Some of the plumes contained very large mixing ratios of PANs but relatively low ozone. Possible reasons for this will be explored and discussed. A second focus of our analysis will be the investigation of the influence of biogenic emissions on the regional photochemistry using the observed ratios of PANs in the continental outflow sampled during NEAQS.
