AB: Peroxycarboxylic Nitric Anhydrides (PANs) were measured aboard the NOAA RV Ronald H Brown (RHB) and at Chebogue Point, NS. (CHB, during the 2004 New England Air Quality Study. Absolute and relative concentrations of peroxyacetic nitric anhydride (PAN) and peroxypropionic nitric anhydride (PPN) showed systematic trends with distance across the Gulf of Maine, consistent with loss due to thermal decomposition. Fog water effects on the net thermal loss processes were also observed, presumably through the uptake of peroxyacetyl radical. The PANs at CHB were consistent with those aged continental airmasses observed in the Gulf of Maine, with occasional higher values due to more direct transport of North American plumes. The presence of fog water at CHB had effects on PAN levels similar to those observed in the RHB data.
