Past and present capabilities for airborne in situ measurements in support of atmospheric electrical studies will be briefly
surveyed with an emphasis on thunderstorm electrification studies. Contributions to our current state of knowledge in this
area will be assessed. Current capabilities will be compared to those needed to advance current understanding of storm
electrification. Plans under development to develop new capbilities to satisfy unmet needs will be presented, with a focus
on efforts at the National Science Foundation.
