AB: An overview of the ongoing R&D work in Finland on mineral carbonation for long-term storage of carbon dioxide is given. Carbonation of magnesium oxide-bearing minerals (serpentine, serpentinite) could contribute significantly to carbon dioxide emissions mitigation in Finland, an EU member state with commitments under the 1997 Kyoto protocol. The results reported include a survey and an evaluation of sustainably potential mineral resources according to the local carbon dioxide emission sources, kinetics studies using thermogravimetric analysis and a fluidised bed reactor, and large-scale process simulation and optimisation calculations. Serious bottlenecks are the large amounts of material involved, the risk for energy consumption of the carbonation process and the slow chemical kinetics of the carbonation reaction.
