AB: Cloud water samples were collected at the East Peak, located at the Caribbean National Forest in Puerto Rico, as part of the Rain in Cumulus over the Ocean Experiment (RICO) during January 2005. Clouds and fogs present in Earth's atmosphere play a fundamental role in the production and removal of new aerosols. Our project seeks to determine the inorganic and organic composition of clouds in the tropical trade winds using ion chromatography (IC) and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. Samples were collected with a single-stage Caltech Active Strand Cloudwater Collector (ss-CASCC). The observed values for conductivity and pH ranged from 30 to 94 æs cm-1 and 6 to 8, respectively. The chemical characterization presented here focuses on the IC analyses since the method for sampling and analyzing organics is still under development. Preliminary results show that the predominant inorganic species are sodium (455 æeq L-1) and chloride (427 æeq L-1). Sulfate and nitrate concentrations were 59.6 and 24.2 æeq L-1, respectively.
