Most research on the climate impacts of land use change has focused on conversion of land into or out of crop production.
However, many management changes occuring within agricultural lands have potential consequences for climate. We evaluated the
biogeophysical effects of different management-related changes in cropland surfaces, including increased productivity,
cropping intensity, irrigation, and changes in soil albedo, on climate using the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model (CAM3). The
impacts of management changes on radiative forcing, evapo-transpiration, and temperature can be significant in certain
regions, with global effects that are comparatively small but significant. The magnitude of these biogeophysical effects
relative to associated biogeochemical changes is discussed. In addition, the effects are compared to those associated with
previous and ongoing land-cover change experiments.
