TI: Fossil-Fuel-Derived Carbon Dioxide Emissions for China at Monthly Resolution

Using a mixture of official government statistics and industrial records, the relative monthly amounts of fossil-fuel-derived
carbon dioxide emissions from China have been estimated for one year (2004). This analysis focused on establishing reliable
monthly statistics that represent the fraction of annual-total solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels consumed during each month.
Ongoing analyses may extend this time series to more than one year. These relative amounts can then be multiplied by the
widely-used, CDIAC-housed data set on annual, fossil-fuel-derived carbon dioxide emissions to obtain estimates of the
absolute mass of carbon dioxide emitted from China at monthly time intervals. This approach has the benefit of yielding
monthly and annual emissions time series that are mutually consistent. The official government statistics and industrial
records are not used directly to calculate these emissions because the monthly data are not as complete as the data used to
derive the annual emissions estimates. However, the monthly data are sufficiently complete to be used as a proxy to
represent the relative monthly emissions. Understanding the monthly fossil fuel carbon dioxide emissions from China is
important because it is currently the second largest emitter of such emissions with 14 percent of the total global emissions
(based on 2002 data) and it has challenging problems assembling the requisite data. This study on China is part of a larger
effort to understand global fossil-fuel-derived carbon dioxide emissions at a time scale smaller than annual.
