AB: The archive of 24 years of year-round observation from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) aboard NOAA satellite (1981-2004) has been generated at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing. To derive this data set, all available historical and current High Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT) and Local Area Coverage (LAC) 1-km AVHRR observations collected in Canada and the NOAA Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System (CLASS) have been collected over the study region. The newly assembled archive contains approximately 10 Terabytes (TB) of raw data and is estimated to increase annually by 0.6 TB. The total number of files reaches nearly 200,000. The details of data processing technology including precision georeferencing, calibration in optical and thermal bands, and new clear-sky/cloud/cloud shadow detection scheme will be presented. The developed processing system was employed to generate baseline 1-day and 10-day clear-sky composites for a 5700 x 4800 sq. km area of North America year round. This region is centered over Canada, but also includes the northern USA, Alaska, Greenland and surrounding oceanic regions. Long-term trends in surface albedo and NDVI over the regions of Canada, and Northern US are analyzed. They reflect glacier retreat in the regions of Western Canada, overall reduction of surface albedo during last 24 years and indicate possible greening of the Northern latitudes. Some other examples of long-term trends will be presented and discussed. The AVHRR 1-km archive overlaps with time series of VEGETATION (VGT) aboard SPOT-4, 5 (1998-2004) and MODIS (Terra&Aqua) since 2000, which are also assembled at the CCRS and used for intercomparison, validation purposes and generation of advanced high-level surface data products. This work has been supported by the Canadian Space Agency under the Government Related Initiatives Program (GRIP) and the Earth Sciences Sector of the Department of Natural Resources Canada under the Program ``Reducing Canada's Vulnerability to Climate Change''.
