AB: As part of a NASA supported Siberian disturbance mapping project, the capabilities of multi-temporal MODIS data to detect insect damage in the boreal forest were evaluated using data from 2000 to 2005. Multi-temporal in the context of this study includes both multi-annual and multi-seasonal data. More specifically, the aim of this study was to ascertain what combination of multi-temporal MODIS Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and Middle Infrared (MIR) data is best for detecting insect disturbance with or without a priori knowledge. The use of MODIS Albedo data is also evaluated. The results suggest that that the combination multi-seasonal EVI and MIR data from the year after the insect damage is sufficient to detect forest area damaged by insects if a priori knowledge is available of at least one instance of when and where the insect disturbance is occurring. If no a priori knowledge exists of the insect outbreak, then an algorithm involving multi-seasonal and multi-annual difference EVI and MIR data, along with fires detected by MODIS and a land cover classification may be used to detect the insect damage. The detected potential insect infested areas are evaluated using high resolution ASTER data. This study builds and expands on our previous work and aims towards evaluating and fine-tuning earlier results as well as incorporating new MODIS data.
