TI: Identification of newly grown microbial populations in soil through stable isotope probing with
[18O]water.

Soil samples were incubated with [18O]water for 14 days and isopycnic centrifugation of the soil DNA showed the formation of
three bands indicating that [18O] can be used in stable isotope probing. Labeling soil DNA with [18O]water allows
identification of newly grown cells or cells that did not divide during the incubation period and avoids artifacts due to
spiking the soil with a labeled nutrient. Because actively growing populations are responsible for much of the assimilation
of carbon and nitrogen and use of electron donors and acceptors, [18O]water stable isotope probing provides an exciting new
approach to link microbial ecology to ecosystem processes such as the carbon cycle.
