AB: Soil NOx (NOx,s) emission from agricultural regions in the western United States has been investigated using spaced-based observations of NO2 from the SCIAMACHY (Scanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY) instrument. The high spatial and temporal resolution of SCIAMACHY captures the short intense NOx pulses following fertilizer application and subsequent precipitation. Tuning of the mechanistic parameters that drive NOx,s emission yield an updated local NOx,s emission estimate capable of capturing the detailed enhancements observed from space. These results demonstrate that the information contained in current space-based observations of NO2 is such that future inverse modeling studies could tune the mechanistic parameters contained in the a priori, rather than solely the magnitude of an existing NOx,s source strength.
