AB: The objective of this research activity is to develop, validate and analyze a global data set of vegetation leaf area index (LAI) and fraction absorbed PAR (FPAR) from AVHRR and MODIS data. The data set is expected to cover a 24 year period from July 1981 through June 2005. This research program exploits simultaneous availability of AVHRR and MODIS data leverages off and a considerable amount of validation activity under the EOS program to realize the objective of this research. We have developed two global LAI data sets for the period from July, 1981 to December, 2004 using available GIMMS-NDVI, PAL-NDVI and MODIS LAI time series. Simultaneous available GIMMS-NDVI and high quality MODIS LAI data sets covering a 4 year period from February 2000 through October 2003 were used to derive accurate relationships between NDVI and LAI. The NDVI-LAI relationships then were applied to the 1981-2000 GIMMS-NDVI data to generate global LAI fields for the pre-MODIS period. Time series of global LAI for the entire period from July, 1981 to October, 2003 were obtained by joining GIMMS and MODIS LAI fields. Since the quality of the PAL-NDVI data set for the period from February, 2000 to October, 2003 were questionable, we used GIMMS LAI and PAL-NDVI covering a 20 year period (1981-2000) to derive PAL specific NDVI-LAI relationships and to generate temporal variation in global PAL LAI field. Analysis of these data sets as well as an alternative physically-based approach to generate time series of global LAI and FPAR fields are presented in this poster.
