AB: The Kalahari Transect (KT) wet season and dry season field campaigns of 2004 - 2005 investigated the importance of hydrologic and nutrient controls on the productivity of southern African savanna ecosystems. Site transects and fertilizer experiments were designed for each of four sites located along an aridity gradient from Mongu, Zambia in the north (1600 mm/yr precipitation), to Tshane, Botswana in the south (250 mm/yr precipitation). Soil and vegetation characterization along with NASA remote sensing imagery provide the groundwork for modeling efforts that are currently underway. This overview will highlight the goals, objectives, and preliminary results of this interdisciplinary and collaborative effort. The site description, summary of international collaboration, and background discussion sections of this overview provide a context for separate papers on the KT 2004 - 2005 field campaigns.
