TI: Correlation of Lightning Intensity With the Frequency of Wildland Fires

AB: In this study we have taken the data from the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) which is a part of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and have tried to study the areas which are most susceptible to wildland fires as a result of increased lightning counts. The wildland fires counts has been taken from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) thermal anomaly products at 1 kilometers resolution. LIS is a satellite borne instrument and is to detect the distribution and variability of total lightning globally. We have used the AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) Global Land Cover Classification generated by University of Maryland and MODIS land surface temperature to study the effects of land surface type and the surface temperature one the correlation between the lightning intensity and the wildland fire counts. Our preliminary results show a high degree of correlation in parts of Africa during the summer months.
