TI: Relative Sea Level and Related Constraints on the Evolution of the Antarctic Ice Sheet During the Most
Recent Glacial-Interglacial Transition

One of the most interesting issues concerning the most recent deglaciation event of the current ice-age has to do with the
magnitude of the contribution that each of the glaciated regions made to the net eustatic rise of sea level that took place
subsequent to LGM. Since the Barbados data set of Fairbanks( 1989 and subsequent) now strongly constrains the net postglacial
sea level rise to a value very close to the classical value of 120 m inferred on the basis of del-18O measurements in deep
sea sedimentary cores, we now have a firm integral constraint that any model of the deglaciation event must satisfy. Since
the net mass loss from each of the most heavily glaciated regions, save Antarctica, is strongly constrained by local
measurements of relative sea level history given accurate data on the position of the ice sheet margins during glacial
retreat,it is now possible to provide quite unambiguous constraints upon the amount and timing of the Antarctic contribution.
I will focus in this paper upon the results of recently published re-analysis of the extent to which measurement of the
relative strength of mwp-1a at Barbados and the Sunda Shelf may be employed to require a southern hemisphere source for this
event( Peltier, 2005, QSR 24, 1655-1671). Also to be discussed will be the extent to which northern hemisphere RSL data may
be employed to constrain the Antarctic contribution to mwp-1b.
