TI: Estimation of the Basal Melt Rate at NorthGRIP

AB: During the drilling of the 3090 m long ice core from NorthGRIP on the Greenland Ice Sheet, it became evident that the ice is melting at the bottom. The melting is caused by an unexpectedly high geothermal heat flux in the area. When it became known that there is basal melting at NorthGRIP it was concluded from radio-echo sounding (RES) profiles, that there must be basal melting over a large area in Northern Greenland. Simple one- and two-dimensional models are used to simulate the ice flow in the vicinity of the NorthGRIP drill site. A Monte Carlo method constrained by the RES profiles is used to invert the flow models. Thus estimates of the melt rates and the geothermal heat fluxes around NorthGRIP are obtained.
