The connection between Eurasian snow cover conditions and South and Southeast Asian summer monsoon rainfall has been widely
studied and discussed; yet, there are no straightforward conclusions. Aside from the complex nature of the problem,
imperfect-simulation models, variations in type and quality of snow information, and differences in the time periods of
available data may also have contributed to the inconsistency of results. This study uses four different indicators of
Eurasian snow conditions to reveal each of their connections to Southeast summer monsoon rainfall using the greatest range of
historical snow data records currently available.
The snow indicators include fall snow cover, mean winter snow depth, maximum snow depth, and snow starting dates. Results
suggest different indicators of snow condition have different (and even contradict) connections to summer monsoon rainfall.
Connections also vary from region to region in South and Southeast Asia. In addition, this study also implies that stronger
signals of connection are found when regional differences in snow condition are included.
