AB: The Antarctic Master Directory (AMD) has been accumulating data set descriptions for more than ten years. Recent statistics document the success of this international effort: content of the AMD (measured as the number of data set descriptions, by their country of origin), and usage (measured as the number of AMD searches and data set description retrievals, by country of origin) show marked and sustained increases. A related ongoing effort to involve all of the countries with Antarctic field research programs is also proving to be successful, with more and more countries contributing data set descriptions to the AMD. The results to date indicate that the AMD is becoming more and more useful to scientists, educators and policy makers. It provides an easy to use, flexible yet consistent, no-cost discovery tool to find out what data have been collected, by whom, how, and in many cases, provide direct access through links to online data repositories. The AMD is also an easy way for scientists to promote recognition of their work amongst the scientific community, thereby fostering interaction, potential collaboration and future funding opportunities. This paper describes the AMD, how to use it and how to contribute to it. The international organizational framework and relevance to current and planned Antarctic initiatives are also described.
