TI: Modeling Sea Ice Albedo Feedback and the Ice Mass Balance

AB: The mass balance of sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic has been measured over several years using both manual ice thickness gauges and remotely deployed ice mass buoys that record in situ temperatures (in ice, ocean and air), snow depth, and basal ice accretion. Measurements of ice mass balance have been collected in the Arctic during SHEBA (1997-1998), the North Pole Observatory (2000-2005), and Barrow, Alaska ice experiments (2001-2002), and with buoys deployed in the Antarctic during the Southern GLOBEC (2002-2003). Comparisons between these measurements have illustrated the significant differences in ice mass balance and the growth and melt cycles in these regions. Modeling the sea ice mass balance in these regions using a thermodynamic sea ice model with atmospheric and ocean forcing from observational data provides a validation of the model processes involved in the mass balance. Differences in surface albedo evolution, surface melt and ponds, and temperature profiles all contribute to the combined effect on the ice mass balance. The result is that the representation of the sea ice interactions in climate models, including ice-albedo feedback, can be significantly different from that derived from in situ observations.
