TI: Analysis of ICESat Data using Kalman Filter and Kriging to Study Surface Height Changes and Surface Characteristics in East Antarctica

AB: We analyze ICESat derived heights collected between Feb.03-Nov.04 using a kriging/Kalman filtering approach to investigate height changes in East Antarctica. A 5-km Digital Elevation Model, constructed using Laser 2a data, is used as the background from which we obtain height residuals. The combined kriging / kalman filtering model refines the residuals to estimate the height change rate in each (100km)2 block in East Antarctica, along with the seasonal signal expressed as amplitude and phase terms. To account for systematic pointing errors and deficiency in the model due to the coarse representation of the surface, we use two additional terms to model the surface as a stochastic process. Geographically and temporally correlated pointing errors in the current data releases give uncertainties in the range of 0.06m/yr, making height change detection unreliable at this time. We anticipate the removal of these errors both by the ICESat team and using our model in the near future. Our test shows that when using all available data with pointing knowledge equivalent to that of Laser 2a, height change detection with an accuracy level 0.02m/yr can be achieved over the interior of East Antarctica.
