AB: Comparison of aircraft laser-altimeter surveys of Svalbard glaciers in 1996 and 2002 showed general thinning, but with high spatial variation and substantial thickening of Austfonna ice cap in the northeast. Here, we present results from comparing the aircraft measurements with ICESat data from 2003 to 2005. Although larger than anticipated uncertainties in our knowledge of GLAS laser pointing introduce considerable noise to derived elevation changes over the sloping glaciers, results show a general increase in thinning, with a shift from thickening towards thinning over Austfonna.
