AB: We will use observations and model simulations to investigate the impact of increasing summer open water extents on the growth of ice in the subsequent winter season. The large expanses of open water substantially increase the absorption of solar radiative fluxes which warm the ocean and slow the formation of ice during the following fall. Buoy air temperatures, satellite sea surface temperatures, model-based estimates of the ocean heat content, and model-based estimates of the ice thickness changes will be used to investigate the fate of the increased heat absorbed during the summer months.
