TI: Sensitivity of Energy and Mass Balance over Snow and Sea Ice on Turbulent Flux Parameterization and Snow Processes

AB: Surface exchange with the atmosphere over snow is complicated by snow processes such as surface phase changes, penetrating shortwave radiation, ventilation and atmospheric stability. For diverse applications such as assessing polar and glacier mass balances, climate sensitivity or avalanche danger, an accurate description of surface exchange is necessary, however. This contribution presents sensitivity studies with the one-dimensional snow cover model SNOWPACK. We analyse data sets from Alpine sites as well as from ice Station Weddell for the influence of these snow processes and of atmospheric stability corrections. We show that none of the processes can be neglected if an accurate reconstruction of the measured fluxes or snow cover development is attempted. Especially, the formation of thin critical layers with respect to snow stability such as surface hoar, depends critically on the processes that occur in the uppermost snow layers.
