TI: The Morphology of the sea ice Edge at Multiple Scales From Remote Sensing Data

AB: The location and shape of the edge of the sea ice pack is important for monitoring the overall extent of sea ice cover, routing shipping, and understanding dynamic processes in the marginal ice zone. In this study, the shape of the ice edge is characterized and compared using data from several satellite-borne remote sensing instruments including the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and the C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) aboard RADARSAT. The spatial resolution of these instruments ranges from tens of kilometers to tens of meters. In addition to their potential for supporting the applications listed above, the results of the study have been useful for validating sea ice products derived from remote sensing data.
