AB: High resolution trace element records from polar ice cores are fundamental to identifying paleoclimate trends. Specifically, a broad range of co-registered elemental records are required to be able to accurately differentiate between multiple sources (e.g. Na, Mg, Ca are primarily tracers for seasalt; and Mn, Rb, Sr are primarily tracers for crustal dust). Using the Continuous Flow Analysis with Trace Elements Dual (CFA-TED) methodology, high resolution trace element records over recent centuries have been developed for ice cores from several Greenland sites. Source apportionments of these records were determined with a multivariate clustering technique called Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). PMF is similar to a Principle Component Analysis, but is not bound by the same limitations (e.g., data uncertainties), and in many cases has been shown to be more environmentally realistic. The results of the PMF analysis indicate that the datasets are best characterized by 4 unique sources, of which seasalt and crustal dust appear to be the dominant two source factors. These source apportionments have been verified against traditional component mixing models. Preliminary results indicate dust and seasalt apportionments vary depending upon location (coastal site vs inland site). Further, the dust and seasalt concentrations vary on both annual and longer term scales.
