TI: Investigating subglacial processes using an in situ wireless multisensor probe.

AB: Glacier behaviour is partly controlled by subglacial processes. Over the last 20 years these processes have been monitored by wired subglacial instruments that have shown the dynamism of the subglacial environment. We show the results from a new type of instrument designed to understand subglacial process - the wirelss multisensor probe. These probes are inserted in to the till and ice, transmit their data to the glacier surface by radio, and the data is then shown live on the web - www.glacsweb.org. These probes were installed at Briksdalsbreen, Southern Norway, during the summers of 2003, 4 and 5. They are located beneath the ice where it was approximately 70m deep and they record temperature, pressure, stress, resistivity and tilt. The sensors are held within a small probe which mimics a natural clast. We now have results which show the behaviour of the probes and the subglacial environment for over 1 year, including clast rotation and subglacial porewater pressure. We are able to show conditions during the winter, `spring event' and summer, and begin to model subglacial behaviour.
