TI: INPOSE: A Proposed UAF- UArctic IPY Post Secondary Education Initiative

AB: The International Polar Year (IPY) and other International Year Initiatives targeted for 2007-2009 will focus on promoting an awareness of the critical role of the Polar Regions in controlling the dynamics of the Earth system. These international years are envisioned to have unprecedented opportunities to bring together the international scientific community to collaborate in research and education outreach, and bring about a global impact. Integrated Polar System Science Education (Inpose) is a proposed post secondary education program which will be available to a global audience through the University of the Arctic, a cooperative network of universities, colleges, and other organizations committed to higher education and research. It recognizes the vital role of indigenous peoples in the success of Arctic research, and builds on the strengths of its strong networking with the local communities. The proposed education and outreach effort will focus on generating upper undergraduate / graduate course curricula on polar system science including curricula using innovative distance education approaches; building enduring indigenous research capacity in Arctic communities by supporting graduate education; and supporting international collaboration in Arctic science education and outreach through support for University of the Arctic field course and PhD networks. The 8 main upper undergraduate level courses proposed are Introduction to Polar System Science; Geoinformatics for the Arctic; Arctic Biosphere; Arctic Cryosphere; Arctic Atmosphere and Heliosphere; Arctic Human Dimension: Ecological Principles, Law and Policy; Understanding the Arctic: Indigenous knowledge and western science: and Arctic Field Experience and Practicum.
