AB: The desire to understand enigmatic earthquake processes led a group of scientists and engineers to work at depth of 3.6 km below ground surface. These researchers follow the earthquakes to their focal depth by using the infrastructure of TauTona gold mine, South Africa, which is the deepest mine in the world,. The participants, who come from USA, South Africa, Germany, Japan and Israel, install a wide range of instruments in the mine tunnels, and they hope to capture the fine details of earthquakes by monitoring radiation and deformation at the near-field. The work at the deep mine is challenging. It is conducted under extreme and demanding conditions of heat, humidity, and darkness, as well as the danger of rockbursts and earthquakes. We present here a visual perspective of the people of the NELSAM project (Natural Earthquakes Laboratory in South African Mines, http://earthquakes.ou.edu), and the environment of their research.
