AB: Organizational structure, practice, and management have an enormous affect on the success of student-lead and student-involved instrument missions. Through its involvements with the student projects SME, SNOE and SDC, LASP has developed organizational approaches that provide high-quality for-flight hardware that employs a mix of professionals and students. Keys to the success of these programs include the following tenets: 1) the professional involvement needs to be well defined at the onset of the program; 2) the organizational structure needs to be clearly defined; 3) student expectations and learning outcomes should be predetermined; and 4) the scope of the project needs to incorporate the time constraints of student availability so that outcomes allow students to experience project success (or project milestones) prior to graduation.
