AB: The Biocomplexity Project brought together scientist, educators, and students in a project to advance our measurement capabilities of carbon isotopes in the atmosphere. As policy makers and the public work to address the need for action against climate change, the aim of this project was to fill glaring uncertainitites in what is known about the global carbon cycle. Specifically, scientists have been aware that there is a an unknown carbon "sink" or absorber that has thus far lessened the impact of our carbon dioxide emissions. This research seeks to establish this very important carbon sink. Simultaneously, the project sought to bridge the gap between state-of-the-art science research and technology and high school science and engineering. Both teachers and students worked on the project and translated their experience into educational materials and a website whereby others can learn what they did. The paper seeks to highlight how to best organize such a project between high school students, educators, and the research community as well as pitfalls to avoid and successes along the way.
