TI: Promoting Careers and Career Development: What Geoscience Faculty and Departments Can Do

AB: Geoscience faculty and departments have an important role to play in the professional development of their students for careers in the geosciences or other fields. Studies by the physics and mathematics communities indicate the importance of activities such as recruiting, advising, and, mentoring students, assisting with professional development for a diversity of careers, providing opportunities for undergraduates to participate in research, and making connections with the local industries and businesses that employ graduates. Faculty can help students make more informed career decisions and develop skills that will be of value in their career through a variety of strategies ranging from providing information about careers in geoscience in entry-level courses, having students conduct informational interviews, publicizing internships and research experiences, organizing speakers or panels focused on different career options, fostering connections between students and alumni who have similar career interests, and working with students as an advisor or mentor to help them explore career options.
