Science Bulletins, a current science media program from the American Museum of Natural History (New York, USA), brings
Biodiversity and Earth System Science data and concepts to a current network of 27 institutions across the U.S.A., reaching a
combined audience of over 10 million visitors. News stories and visualizations found throughout the Science Bulletins
program rely on geospatial data for both content and context. The target audience is diverse, from novice to expert, so
imagery and data are carefully interpreted to present a clear narrative. Biodiversity news stories and visualizations use the
capabilities of satellite imagery to focus public attention on four general themes: human influences on species and
ecosystems across all observable spatial extents; biotic feedbacks with the Earth's physical system; characterizing species
and ecosystems; and recent events such as natural disasters, major findings and publications, or recent syntheses. For Earth
Science, recent natural events are used to explain the broad scientific concepts of tectonic activity and the processes that
underlie climate and weather events. Visualizations show the global, dynamic distribution of atmospheric constituents,
sea-surface temperature and temperature anomaly, and sea ice. Long-term changes are set in contrast to seasonal cycles and
longer-term patterns so that viewers appreciate the variety of forces that affect Earth's physical system. Concepts are
illustrated at a level appropriate for a broad audience to learn more about the dynamic nature of Earth's biota and physical
processes.
