TI: The Geoscience Community in the U.S. and Abroad: A Statistical Overview

AB: This paper provides data on the global geoscience community from several sources. It will provide a snapshot of the AGU membership in the U.S. and abroad, including the dominant subfields of interest of AGU members residing in different regions of the world. PhD data from the National Science Foundation and bachelor's data from the U.S. Department of Education will show the trends in degree production over time. These data will be disaggregated to show how the number of degrees awarded in major subfields within the geosciences have changed over time. Data will be provided on the change in composition of degree recipients, especially in terms of citizenship. In addition, data will be presented on the impact of visa restrictions on graduate students from abroad in the physical sciences generally and in the geosciences in particular. The paper will conclude with a discussion of the pro's and con's of recent calls for dramatic increases in U.S. degree production in the sciences.
