The North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) is one of the most seismically active fault of the world. It runs along the northern
part of Turkey about 1500 km, from the Karliova to the North Aegean. Because of the higher seismic activity on NAFZ, many
scientists have been focused on this region to investigate crustal deformation and block kinematics by Global Positioning
System (GPS) measurements. Geodetic observations have been performed for monitoring both local and regional crustal movements
by establishing microgeodetic networks along plate boundaries on the NAFZ. A research project has been started with the
collaboration of Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI) of Bogazici University and the Marmara
Research Center of the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK-MAM) to investigate crustal deformation
and block kinematics along the eastern sector of the NAFZ by GPS measurements. Three campaign based measurements were
performed at sixteen GPS stations in the area, despite the hard conditions. This paper presents the study and some results
obtained from these GPS observations.
