The International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) is a standard
multi-technique combined frame for Earth Science applications which
range from subtle geophysical processes to global phenomena as for
example the mean sea level variations. Accuracy, reliability and
long-term stability of the ITRF are the main challenges to achieve,
without degrading the quality of the individual contributing techniques
or contaminating the resulting combined frame with systematic errors.
Contrary to the previous ITRF versions where global solutions were used,
the ITRF2004 input data are time series of station positions and Earth
Orientation Parameters (EOPs). This new approach allows to better
monitor the behavior of station non-linear motions as well as to
ensure the consistency between the ITRF and IERS EOPs. Pertinent
results of the ITRF2004 will be presented and used as guidance to
underline, and to further investigate for future improvements,
limitations, weaknesses and systematic errors. A special focus will
be given to discuss combination methodology, importance and impact
of local ties, technique-specific systematic errors, current VLBI,
SLR, GPS and DORIS networks configuration and their impact on
the ITRF datum definition.
