ESA's first Earth Explorer Core mission, GOCE, will be the first satellite mission ever to measure the Earth's gravity
gradients in space. These gradiometer measurements in combination with the GPS satellite-to-satellite tracking data will
allow the derivation of a satellite-only global gravity field model with unprecedented accuracy and resolution. Such a global
gravity field model will be given in terms of a spherical harmonic expansion. In addition, global grids of geoid heights and
gravity anomalies, at the Earth's surface, will be provided. Another GOCE product, however, consists of pre-processed
gravity gradients along the satellite orbit. These gravity gradients may have a spatial resolution that surpasses that of the
other products. This might be particularly useful for regional and local applications in geodynamics and oceanography.
In this presentation we will first focus on the pre-processing of the GOCE gravity gradients and their information content.
Secondly, a potential regional application of the gravity gradients is discussed. It is investigated how regionally the
dynamic topography may be recovered based on a combination of seismic tomography and gravity gradients. The strengths and
weaknesses of such a regional approach will be discussed.
