Least squares collocation is an estimation technique where discretely located observations of different kinds can be
integrated. The technique allows a rigorous description of the full covariance associated with signal, the errors as well as
the estimated quantities. In this presentation error covariances associated with the gravity field and the ocean dynamic
topography are analysed and described.
The multi-disciplinary project "Geoid and Ocean Circulation in the North Atlantic (GOCINA)" aims at enhancing the European
capacity in Earth observation using data from the approved European Space Agency missions ENVISAT and GOCE. The project will
in particular support the GOCE mission with a set of specific recommendation for integrating GOCE in ocean circulation
studies and an accurate geoid model for validation purposes. The integration data streams from three independent technologies
- eg. GOCE gravimetry and satellite altimetry- into a single process may deliver an `optimal' Mean Dynamical Topography.
Two examples of the technique used on GOCINA data are presented One example where the standard GOCE gravity field models are
used and one example where GOCE data are used directly in least squares collocation to obtain an optimal product.
