The National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping (NCALM) was established in 2003 to: 1) provide research grade airborne laser
swath mapping (ALSM) data to the research community, 2) advance the technology (including software) of ALSM, 3) evaluate
other remote sensing technologies that would complement ALSM and 4) provide training for students. The National Science
Foundation (NSF) has just renewed the center for three years, staring from August 1, 2005. NCALM is operated jointly by the
Department of Civil & Coastal Engineering, University of Florida (UF) and the Department of Earth and Planetary Science,
University of California-Berkeley (UCB). With the renewal, Florida International University (FIU) has been added to the
center, to provide software development and support to the earth sciences community. NCALM uses an Airborne Laser Swath
Mapping (ALSM) system jointly owned by UF and FIU. The ALSM sensor, GPS receiver, and other necessary hardware and software
are installed in a dedicated Cessna 337 Skymaster aircraft, but other aircraft are leased for projects that require flights
beyond the capabilities of the Cessna 337. The data are processed and analyzed at UF, FIU, and UCB, and are archived and
distributed by UCB. During the last two years, NCALM has provided research grade data to more than 20 Universities and PIs
across the country. The original NCALM planning assumed that most projects would cover relatively small areas, but the
proposals received by NSF include some large projects-mapping 900 km of the southern potion of the San Andreas fault, for
example, quickly used-up the 60 hours of laser on time (LOT) originally planned for the first two years. A total of 122 hrs
of LOT was used during the first two years, and a number of approved projects have not yet been completed. This presentation
will discuss what has been accomplished, give an overview of the current status, and outline what lies ahead for the next
three years.
