AB: InSAR signals of surface deformation associated with sub-terrain sources such as tunnels, mining activity, and underground nuclear tests have contributed to the ever-widening application space of InSAR over the past decade. InSAR has revealed subtle subsidence signatures associated with these sources, many located several hundred meters deep, and illuminated previously unobserved subsidence phenomena. The discovery of these signatures has allowed for the construction of more sophisticated source models that more accurately simulate the physics of the overlying subsidence processes producing the observed surface deformation. InSAR time-series analysis of these signals allow for time dependent simulations with nonlinear time and stress-dependent material properties that incorporate damage factors and failure criteria. The lessons learned from modeling complex subsidence phenomena can be applied to earthquake seismic cycles to perhaps better understand the physics of earthquakes and their recurrence intervals.
