In this study we propose an integrated analysis of geodetic and seismological data in order to characterize the kinematic of
faulting in the western flank of Mt. Etna. Here we compute the strain parameters in this sector of the volcano by the
inversion of the EDM distances, measured during the period 1980-2004. The presence of a main NE-SW fault, of which only
little surface evidence exists, has been here investigated by a careful analysis of the strong seismic swarm occurred on
April 20-24, 2001 forerunning the July-August 2001 eruption. Along this tectonic lineament, the observed right lateral
rupture mechanisms are incompatible with the ca. N-S regional tectonic stress regime. This behaviour constrained by also
geodetic observations over the last 25 years depicts the tectonic response of the medium to major stresses applied by the
magma push. In fact, as verified by a Coloumb stress change model analysis, stress perturbations associated with dikes
intrusion along the S-SE Rift are sufficient to induce this type of slip along this fault.
