TI: Regional Comparisons of Optical and Chemical Properties of Atmospheric Aerosol between Gosan, Jeju and KGAWO Anmyeon in South Korea

AB: With the aim to develop the monitoring technology on background atmosphere and climate change over Korean Peninsula, the observations at two sites; the super site of the background atmosphere at Gosan, Jeju and Korea Global Atmospheric Watch Observatory (KGAW) at Anmyeon, and analysis on chemical, physical and optical properties of the atmospheric aerosols are investigated. For the comparisons, in the aerosols of PM2.5 sampled at other sites, the majority of their masses of 40-50% are composed of water soluble ions, such as sulfate, ammonium salt and nitrate. The mass concentrations of are found to be about 20 g·m-3 at Gosan and Duckjuk Island, 30 g·m-3 at Kanghwa, Anmyeondo and Dongbaek Island, and 46 g·m-3 at Suwon. Aerosol number concentrations have been measured with Optical Particle Counter (OPC) during the time period from 2001 to 2003 at Gosan and Anmyeon for 8 size intervals from 0.3 to 25 §- diameter range. The monthly mean number concentration of aerosol at both observation sites showed a similar distribution at all size classes. For the seasonal variations, the number concentration of coarse particles in spring at Gosan and Anmyeondo show the higher concentrations than other seasons due to the influence of sand storm in spring. There is no significant correlations between fine particles (0.3-0.5 §) and meteorological parameters, such as relative humidity, wind speed and visual range, while the correlation between the number concentration of small particles and relative humidity showed a positive value. Particles most efficient in light extinction were found to be at the size of about 0.5-1.0 §-. In aerosol optical properties, Optical Depth (AOD), Ångström exponents, and Single Scattering Albedo SSA) have measured for understanding at both site, Gosan and Anmyeondo, since 1999. AOD at Gosan show with the value of 0.43 which is lager than that at Anmyeon with 0.33, while Single Scattering Albedo at Anmyeon with 0.93 show the higher than that at Gosan with the value of 0.88. Ångström exponents and the values of PM2.5 at Gosan (0.87) show the smaller values rather than Anmyeon with 1.23.
