TI: Stratospheric Variability and Trends in IPCC Model Simulations

AB: Climate model experiments for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report are analyzed using both 20th and 21st century model output. Model simulations of the 20th century are compared with satellite and radiosonde climatologies to better understand model variability and assess the importance of various forcing mechanisms on stratospheric trends. Although there is general agreement in the sign of temperature trends in the stratosphere, significant differences are observed and linked with the inclusion of forcing mechanisms such as stratospheric ozone depletion. Model simulations of the 21st century and the relationship between tropospheric wave forcing and stratospheric variability will also be discussed.
