AB: Our impressions of the impacts of Asian aerosols are influenced to some extent by where we make observations. For example, the airborne and shipborne data in ACE-Asia were taken offshore of the Asian continent in spring of 2001, downwind of several countries. By contrast, our East-Aire data were collected in Xianghe, PRC, 70 km east of Beijing in March of 2005. There are notable differences in some of the findings from the two experiments, especially for aerosol intensive properties. The single-scatter-albedo, for instance, was much smaller (more absorbing) near sources than it was over the ocean. Energy production, coal burning, and residential energy use often dominated the aerosols at Xianghe. We will consider explanations for the observed differences, such as the growth of scattering aerosols due to gas-to-particle conversion during transit. Radiative transfer and climate models may need to allow intensive parameters to change as aerosols evolve over time.
