AB: Solar radiation reaching the ground in China was analyzed based on four data sets. NCEP reanalysis solar radiation data exceeded surface observations by 40 W/m2 to more than 100 W/m2. Satellite data sets produced by GISS and UMD were correlated significantly with surface observations, but they exceeded surface observations over much of China. Solar insolation in China declined significantly from 1961 to 1990 according to surface observations, but the decrease trend did not persist into the 1990s. Instead, a pronounced increase trend has been observed from 1984 to 2000. Quite different trends were derived from simultaneous satellite estimates. First, the trends were much less than that of surface observations. Second, the trends were negative over much of China. The effects of differences in space-time sampling between satellite-derived and surface-based measurements might account partly for the systematic overestimation by satellite and inconsistency in the trends. More importantly, representation of aerosols in the calculation should be improved in order to make satellite estimates more robust over regions with high aerosol loading.
