For growing needs of knowledge on worldwide food supply, USDA and NASA have been developing an Agricultural Information
System (AIS), which can be globally applied. One of the essential input parameter for AIS is precipitation that should be
spatially and temporally consistent. TRMM precipitation products can satisfy this condition with relatively low cost than in
situ rain rate measurements. For the application of TRMM precipitation to AIS, TRMM algorithms (3G68, 3B42, 3B43) were
statistically analyzed and compared with each other and with Climate District, Mesonet, Air Force (for Oklahoma, US) and GPCC
(for Oklahoma, US and Argentina sub-region) rain rates in the study. TRMM is available in 0.25 deg resolution, higher than
AFWA (0.5 deg), which is currently used in AIS by USDA. TRMM was correlated with GPCC, Mesonet and CD rain rates as well as
AFWA or better in some cases. Future study includes comparison between 3-hourly TRMM and 3-hourly US Air Force's
Agricultural Meteorology modeling system (AGRMET) precipitation.
