Air quality databases in developing countries and regions in East Asia have been improving rapidly in the past ten years or
more. For emissions data, resolutions of emissions database have been enhanced significantly; diurnal variations of major
pollutants have been added; area, point line sources have been separately defined; accuracies of emissions flux have been
improved. For observation data, coverage and numbers of observation stations have been increased, advanced measurement
equipments have been applied; operational procedure and data quality have been improved. Therefore simple comparison of
current air quality to that of the past may not be indicative of true environmental changes. Cases studies of high ozone
episodes in northern Taiwan show that past ozone data had inadequate coverage missing regions of high ozone. This contributes
to overestimation in ozone change in this region for the past decade. Joint use of air quality model and air quality
observations allowed us to provide some preliminary estimates of the uncertainties in environmental air quality trends. We
will discuss such estimates due to emissions data change, observational network change and other input changes to air quality
models. It is expected that similar situations is happening in other developing areas of Southeast Asia which has been
receiving increasing attention in contributing to air quality changes in this region.
