TI: Magnetospheric Contributions to the Surface Magnetic Field

AB: The accurate description of the Earth's magnetic field depends on high quality measurements of the field by satellite and ground magnetometers. It is essential that these measurements be obtained during quiet times. It is often difficult to define when these intervals occur since it is the same data sets that define the level of activity that are used in the models of the main field. A problem of great interest is the degree to which currents in the magnetospere affect the measurements of mgnetic field during quiet times. The magnetopause, the magnetotail, the ring current, the partial ring current, and small disturbances such as pseudo breakups, weak substorms, and poleward boundary intensifications can occur even during very quiet times. In this paper we will define these phenomena and present the characteristics used to classify them. We will perform statistical analysis of some ground magnetometer data to illustrate effects of these current during quiet times.
