The advent of the satellite era has increased our knowledge of the
magnetic field of the core. Though we remain highly dependent on
observatory data for temporal control, the global coverage of
satellites provides ideal data sets for increasing our resolution of
the core field. We will report on new models of the field at the
core-mantle boundary that we are developing which make use of new
techniques in solving the inverse problem. These attempt to inject
some of the underlying physics into the process in a reasonable manner.
The models we create have smaller scale features than previous models,
and we will discuss the repercussions for the problem of retrieval of
the flow at the core surface.
