TI: The Diversity of Planetary Magnetic Fields in the Solar System

AB: This talk will review what is known about planetary magnetic fields in the solar system taking a broad view of what is meant by a planetary magnetic field. Diverse magnetic properties characterize the bodies of the solar system. Bodies with active dynamos are familiar and include the Sun and the gas giants as well as Earth and small scale Mercury and Ganymede. These bodies differ greatly in the ratios of their dipolar fields to their higher order multipole fields. Other bodies generate planetary scale magnetic fields through induction (the icy moons of Jupiter for sure) and yet others are relevant to the subject because they preserve fossil fields thought to be related to early dynamo action (Mars, Moon). Despite some indirect evidence that asteroids may harbor remanent magnetic fields, direct measurements have, to this time, failed to support the suggestion. Still, the strong remanent magnetism of some meteorites makes it plausible that bodies with significant remanent magnetism may be out there in the asteroid belt or the Kuiper belt.
