TI: Watershed Classification Based on Hydrologic Response Behavior

AB: One of the main challenges in hydrology is to establish a relationship between watershed structure and watershed function (or response behavior). Understanding this relationship is a necessary prerequisite to modeling ungauged watersheds and to classify watershed with respect to their response behavior. This has in the past often been attempted through the regionalization of watershed models, i.e. by establishing relationships between model parameters and watershed characteristics. This has serious drawbacks, for example due to the equifinality problem that precludes the identification of optimal parameter sets and thus reduces the value of any established relationship. The present study analyzes how characteristics of watershed streamflow behavior are directly related to watershed structure (incl. soil type, topography etc.) at different time-scales ranging from annual to daily. We then evaluate how these behavioral characteristics can be used for watershed classification. A set of 25 small to medium sized watersheds located in England has been utilized for this purpose.
